Grocer Gunst's mission is to make local produce more accessible in Vancouver and to improve regional food security by providing a direct link between local farmers employing the most sustainable agricultural methods and urban community members, while offering affordable prices, minimizing the environmental impact of our transportation, and offering our customers a personal experience with their food. _______________________________________________________________________ A Bit About Biodynamics Grocer Gunst supports only local growers who practice biodynamic farming. Each partner farm is small and only grows food in season, without using any pesticides or other inputs produced outside of the farm. These biodynamic farms create minimal negative impact on the environment; indeed, the goal of the biodynamic method is to farm in harmony with the natural environment and thereby increase the health and biodiversity of the land they occupy. On biodynamic farms, everything that is used in the production of fruits, vegetables, and animals, is produced on the farm. There are no outside inputs. To to do this, all biodynamic farms contain a mix of both plants and animals, and strive to create a balanced, interdependent, and self-contained ecosystem. For Grocer Gunst customers, this means that the variety of produce in the boxes changes week to week and month to month, as different fruits and vegetables enter and exit their respective harvest seasons, since biodynamic farmers can only grow vegetables in their natural seasons. Grocer Gunst wishes to support the biodynamic partner farms as much as possible, and so we stock subscribers' boxes with a variety of everthing the farmers are harvesting in each particular week of delivery. Our subscribers have little choice regarding the contents of their boxes because the boxes function much like a CSA: by supporting Grocer Gunst, subscribers are supporting the partner farms, and thus share in all the bounty the farmers produce. Many in Vancouver are unaccustomed to eating seasonally, having grown up with supermarkets fully stocked with produce from all corners of the globe, so choosing to eat locally and seasonally may seem like a sacrifice. But, for many people, along with eating seasonally comes for them a greater sense of connection to the environment in which they live and a more colorful pantry, as each season brings with it new tastes, aromas, and textures.

I want to make eating well and sustainably an everyday option for me and my community, and I want to make small-scale sustainable agriculture more economically viable for our farmers. Through this delivery service, I aim to bring new meaning to Community Supported Agriculture and turn Vancouver into a city that helps to promote food security in BC through its support for Biodynamics and patronage of Grocer Gunst. I hope you like our mission and give our service a try! -Martin Gunst founder |
